Healing Through Self-Awareness

You are probably sitting in a chair as you read this. Do you notice the weight of your body as it presses into the chair? You do now that I mention it, right? But most of the time your brain just conveniently tunes out that sensory input.
The brain has the ability to filter out unnecessary information. And, to some degree, you are able to choose what you are aware of. You can choose to put your attention on the parts of your body that are touching the chair.
You can also choose to disconnect from your physical and emotional states. And that can be an important survival mechanism when experiencing trauma. But to maintain this disconnection over time will cost you.
We all experience traumas of varying degree in life. Often, we are unable to fully process those experiences at the time they occur.
I remember when my (then) one-year-old son had a febrile seizure. I needed to think and act quickly. I put all of my own panic and fear aside and dealt with the situation. When the paramedics were gone and my baby was doing fine again, I broke down and had a good cry, which is exactly what I needed to do! Those emotions needed to be expressed and allowed or they would have stayed in my body waiting to be processed.

The Healing Tree is my metaphor for a healthy lifestyle. I hope you find something useful here. Remember, though, to make changes in measured steps, one thing at a time, for maximum success. Also, be sure to check with your healthcare providers.
Leaves (mental/emotional/spiritual)
- Sunshine/Nature/Outdoors
- Prayer/Silent meditation
- Abdominal breathing
- Creative meditation (music, drawing, painting, sewing, writing, woodworking, etc.)
- Journaling (gratitude, dreamwork, introspective)
- Sleep enough to feel rested, bed by 10pm if possible, short naps
- Support network of family/friends
- Cultivate feelings of love and gratitude
- Laughter
Trunk (physical)
- Exercise ideally 30-40 minutes, 4 days/week
- Stretching/Moving meditation (yoga, tai chi, qi gong)
- Body work (massage, chiropractic, Rolfing, reflexology, physical therapy)
- Energy work (Healing Touch, EFT, reiki, acupuncture, homeopathy, BioSET)
- Regular medical checkups
Roots (nutrition/diet)
- Water pure, filtered to remove chlorine, lead, fluoride, etc.
- Whole foods and supplements
- Living foods raw or fermented for enzymes and probiotics (yogurt, kefir, kombucha, traditional sauerkraut)
- Organic or pesticide-free
- Meats grassfed or wild, according to your metabolic type
- Plenty of vitamin A and D (eggs, butter, cultured dairy, cod liver oil)
- Unrefined salt for mineral content
- More omega 3 (flax and fish oils) and less omega 6 fatty acids
- No tobacco, trans fats, processed foods, additives, preservatives
- Limit caffeine, refined sugar and flour, alcohol

Heart Chakra Awareness: Balancing the Heart and the Head

Why do we have so many metaphors for the heart? We tell each other to “follow your heart” and we talk about people who are “hard-hearted” or someone with a “heart of gold.” We listen with an “open heart” and when someone hurts us we get a “broken heart.” When we get deep into a topic we “get to the heart of the matter.”
I believe that we use so many metaphors about the heart because we inherently know that it is at the core of our being.
Caroline Myss, author of Energy Anatomy, calls the heart the “central powerhouse of the human energy system.” Of the seven major chakras in the chakra system, the heart is literally at the center. It is the bridge between the lower chakras and the upper chakras.

As a Healing Touch practitioner I often get asked, “What is energy work recommended for?”
Most people are not familiar with the function and needs of the energy body because we didn’t grow up talking about it like we do about our physical body. If we have a broken bone, we know we need to go to a doctor to get it set so it can heal properly. When we are sick we know we need to rest and eat wholesome foods. If our muscles are weak, we know that regular exercise will strengthen them.
But how do you care for your energy body? Obviously getting energy work done will help, but it’s helpful to know what affects your energy body and also the signals it gives when it’s not healthy.
